Precise 3D scanning without cables with FreeScan Combo Wireless

Shining 3D FreeScan Combo Wireless is a handheld metrology 3D scanner for measuring parts, checking geometry, and preparing data for reverse engineering. The blue laser and infrared VCSEL allow you to choose the scanning method according to the surface of the product. An accuracy of 0.02 mm is suitable for dimensional inspection, and Wi-Fi 7 transmits the results to a computer without a cable. When working with parts that have distinct geometric features, the infrared mode makes it possible to do without markers.

Advantages of the scanner for measuring industrial parts

  • High scanning accuracy. An accuracy of 0.02 mm ensures data acquisition for checking the geometry of parts with tight tolerances and preparing measurement reports.
  • Stable accuracy on large objects. The volumetric accuracy with VPG is 0.02 + 0.015 mm/m, which ensures minimal error growth as part dimensions increase.
  • Lightweight and easy to use. The net weight of 550 g and the ergonomic housing reduce strain on the hand during prolonged work.
  • Marker-free scanning. The infrared VCSEL allows scanning of parts with distinct geometric features without applying markers, reducing preparation time.
  • Adaptability to complex surfaces. The blue laser ensures effective scanning of black and reflective surfaces due to its high adaptability to their properties.
  • Freedom of wireless operation. Wi-Fi 7 enables data transmission to a computer without a cable, without affecting scanning accuracy.

Two optical sources for different surfaces

The Shining 3D FreeScan Combo Wireless scanner features two light sources: an infrared VCSEL and a blue laser. It inherits the compact design of the FreeScan Combo series and fully transitions to wireless operation. The description refers to the wireless product line, and the values for the Combo+ Wireless and Combo Wireless are presented separately in the table.

Infrared VCSEL mode

The infrared source rapidly scans parts with distinct features. For such parts, the step of applying marker stickers is eliminated, shortening the preparation for scanning. The maximum field of view in this mode is 830 × 700 mm.

Blue light laser scanning

The blue laser has a very high adaptability to black and reflective surfaces. Such parts are often difficult to scan optically, so this mode expands the range of applications. The maximum field of view of the laser is 580 × 650 mm.

Geometry capture modes and detailing

The scanner features three laser scanning modes for different tasks. Each corresponds to a specific type of surface or feature.

  • High-speed scanning: VCSEL-based mode; the number of lines depends on the version and is specified in the specifications table.
  • Detailed scanning: a mode with 25 parallel laser lines for capturing small details.
  • Deep hole scanning: a mode with a single laser line for narrow recesses.

The resolution is 0.01 ~ 10 mm. A smaller point spacing is chosen for small details, and a larger one for large surfaces.

Measuring large parts with VPG technology

Built-in Video Photogrammetry (VPG) from SHINING 3D provides real-time marker position verification and reduces error accumulation when scanning large objects. Two calibrated scale bars included in the kit help maintain measurement accuracy over significant distances. Due to their reusability, they are suitable for regular geometry inspection of large parts and structures.

Data transmission via Wi-Fi 7 and power options

Data transmission via Wi-Fi 7 allows working without a connection cable to a computer and freely moving the scanner around the object without affecting measurement accuracy. Three power options are provided for the Shining 3D FreeScan Combo Wireless: direct connection to the mains via a power cable, operation from interchangeable batteries, or connection to an external battery (power bank). This allows organising scanning both at a stationary workplace and directly next to industrial equipment.

Calibration and metrological verification

The scanner is supplied with verification reports and calibration certificates. They are traceable to international ISO 10360 standards depending on the actually issued certificates. All calibration and verification procedures are performed by the accredited SHINING 3D Accuracy Lab, operating in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.

Software for scan analysis and CAD modelling

The scanner is compatible with most common software for reverse engineering and inspection. This ensures a continuous workflow from CAD modelling to quality control.

  • EXModel: Software for reverse engineering and processing 3D scan data. It allows editing polygonal models, optimising the mesh, restoring geometric features, and preparing data for further work in CAD systems.
  • Geomagic Design X: Specialised software for creating parametric CAD models based on 3D scanning results. It supports surface creation, recognition of geometric features, and the restoration of part design for further editing and manufacturing.
  • Geomagic Control X: A program for metrological inspection and quality control of manufactured parts. It allows comparing 3D scanning results with reference CAD models, determining geometric deviations, checking dimensions, and generating measurement reports.
  • PolyWorks Inspector: Software for 3D measurements and geometry inspection of industrial products. It supports dimensional analysis, GD&T control, comparing the actual surface with the CAD model, and preparing documentation based on inspection results.
  • SHINING3D Inspect: Modular software for 3D inspection and analysis of geometric parameters of parts. It includes tools for comparing scanned data with CAD models, evaluating dimensional deviations, visualising measurement results, and creating reports for production quality control.

SHINING3D Inspect features PTB-certified measurement capabilities. It covers scanning, analysis, and reporting in desktop, on-device, and automated scenarios. To gain trial access, you simply need to submit an application.

Applications of FreeScan Combo Wireless

  • Reverse engineering: scans are transferred to EXModel or Geomagic Design X to build CAD models of existing parts.
  • Quality control: Geomagic Control X and PolyWorks Inspector support scan inspection, while SHINING3D Inspect covers analysis and reporting.
  • Large objects: with two verified scales and VPG, the Shining 3D FreeScan Combo Wireless increases the overall accuracy of large object scans.
  • Dark and reflective parts: the blue laser is adapted to black and reflective surfaces that are difficult to scan optically.
  • Marker-free parts: the infrared source quickly captures workpieces with distinct features without markers on the surface.
  • Mobile work: interchangeable batteries or a power bank allow scanning where there is no convenient power socket.
