Unitree As2-W Edu Smart for Robotics Research and Development
Unitree As2-W Edu Smart is a wheeled robot dog designed for university laboratories, research teams, and developers of autonomous systems. The Edu Smart version includes an additional computing module and a depth camera, making it suitable for computer vision, SLAM, navigation, and artificial intelligence models. The robot also supports custom software development and scenario testing in NVIDIA Isaac Sim.
Advantages of Unitree As2-W Edu Smart
- High performance for artificial intelligence tasks. A 100 TOPS computing dock allows processing data from cameras and LiDAR, running AI models, computer vision systems, and autonomous navigation algorithms.
- More accurate object distance measurement. The depth camera provides additional spatial data that can be used for navigation, obstacle detection, and environmental analysis.
- Ability to create custom software solutions. The platform supports additional development and provides tools for creating custom software and robot control algorithms.
- Safe testing of algorithms in a virtual environment. Robot models and simulation interfaces support working with NVIDIA Isaac Sim to verify programs and robotic scenarios before deploying them on real equipment.
- Precise orientation and mapping. An industrial 64–128-line LiDAR is used for mapping, SLAM, and determining the robot's position in space.
- Automatic operator following. The ISS 3.0 Intelligent Follow feature allows the robot to move alongside a person and adjust its route while moving.
- High mobility on various surfaces. 16 degrees of freedom combined with joint drives and wheels allow movement on flat surfaces, slopes, stairs, and uneven areas.
- Fast movement in open areas. The working speed is 0–3.7 m/s, with a peak speed of about 6 m/s.
- Capability to install additional equipment. While moving, the robot can carry a load of up to 16 kg, allowing the installation of additional sensors, cameras, and computing modules.
- Long operation without frequent recharging. A Long-Endurance battery with a capacity of 15,000 mAh provides over 3 hours of autonomous operation and a range of approximately 30 km without a load.
- Convenient charging during daily use. The Edu Smart package includes a charging dock for restoring the robot's charge.
Sensors and Software Features
Unitree As2-W Edu Smart features an industrial 64–128-line LiDAR, an HD camera, and a depth camera. LiDAR provides spatial data for mapping and navigation, the HD camera provides video data, and the depth camera determines the distance to objects in front of the robot. The standard equipment also includes a microphone array, speaker, and front light. For software work, ISS 3.0 Intelligent Follow, UniStore, Smart OTA, robot models, and software interfaces are available.
Drives and Mobility
The robot has 16 joint and wheel drives. The drives are equipped with low-inertia high-speed synchronous motors with permanent magnets and an internal rotor. Dual encoders control the position of the drives, local air cooling dissipates heat, and cross-roller bearings are designed for significant mechanical loads.
The controlled joints help adapt the body position on slopes, stairs, and uneven areas, while the wheels accelerate movement on hard surfaces. Additional equipment can be installed on the robot for research and inspection tasks.
Power and Connectivity
Unitree As2-W Edu Smart is equipped with a high-capacity lithium battery, a fast charger, and a charging dock. For data transmission and connecting external equipment, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Gigabit Ethernet, SBUS, and BAT power output are available. GPS and 4G pertain to the version for mainland China and are disabled by default.

Practical Recommendations
- Monitor the weight of additional equipment. For prolonged movement, do not exceed a load of about 16 kg.
- Place modules without shifting the center of gravity. Cameras, sensors, and computing equipment should not interfere with joint operation.
- Clean LiDAR and cameras before starting. Dust and dirt on optics can degrade data quality.
- Test new programs in the simulator. NVIDIA Isaac Sim allows testing navigation and control before deploying on the robot.
- Consider the route and load. Slopes, steps, uneven areas, and additional equipment reduce the actual battery runtime.
