Wheeled Robot Dog Unitree A2-W for Logistics and Complex Field Tasks

Unitree A2-W is a wheeled version of a robot dog designed for professional use in enterprises, research laboratories, R&D centers, and engineering teams. The model effectively combines the advantages of a quadrupedal mechanism with reliable wheels, making it a versatile solution for inspections, logistics operations, patrolling, mapping, and autonomous navigation indoors, in warehouses, production sites, construction sites, and open areas. Thanks to its robust construction made of aluminum alloy and high-strength engineering plastic, the robot has an IP56 protection rating and operates reliably in a wide temperature range from −20 °C to +55 °C. The dimensions of the robot dog are 900 × 440 × 625 mm, in the folded position 930 × 685 × 210 mm. The weight without battery is approximately 45 kg, with two batteries approximately 52 kg.

Main Advantages of Unitree A2-W

  • High load capacity. While moving, the robot can carry up to 25 kg under ideal conditions up to 35 kg, and the maximum static load in a standing position is approximately 100 kg. This allows for the installation of additional sensors, cameras, communication modules, computing units, or special equipment for industrial inspections and logistics tasks.
  • Two hot-swappable batteries. Dual-slot system with hot-swap support. One battery has a capacity of 9000 mAh, two batteries 18000 mAh. This significantly reduces downtime and ensures long operation without interruptions.
  • Long routes. Without load, continuous operation for over 3.5 hours, range approximately 35 km. With a load of 25 kg over 1.5 hours and about 15 km. Actual performance depends on terrain, speed, and operating conditions.
  • Spatial perception. The basic configuration includes 1 LiDAR, an HD camera, and front lighting. This ensures reliable obstacle detection, data collection for mapping, and operation indoors and in open areas.
  • Mechanics for complex terrain. A total of 16 degrees of freedom, industrial cross-roller bearings of high precision, low-inertia high-speed internal rotor PMSM joint motors with a maximum torque of 180 N/m. Wheels (diameter 190 mm, width 51 mm) have a torque of 24 N/m and a speed of 11 rad/s at 58 V. The robot overcomes steps up to 30 cm high, slopes up to 45°, and provides vertical climbing of approximately 0.5–1 m.
  • Protected body. The design ensures reliable operation in conditions of dust, splashes, and moisture.
  • Rich interfaces. RS485 ×2, CAN ×2, Gigabit Ethernet ×2, USB 3.0 Type-C ×4 (separately for 8-core CPU and Intel Core i7), power outputs 12 V / 24 V / BAT.
  • Extended capabilities. Optionally available modules Wireless Vector Positioning Follow, GPS, 4G, and hybrid wheel-leg.

Design and Movement on Complex Surfaces

Unitree A2-W is designed to work in conditions where high passability and speed are required. Wheels with a diameter of 190 mm allow for efficient movement on flat and uneven surfaces, while legs ensure overcoming obstacles.

  • Thigh: −134° ~ +180° / −89° ~ +225°
  • Calf: −158° ~ −30°

Each leg has three joints (Hip, Thigh, Calf). The coordinate system is based on the right-hand rule. The robot develops a speed from 0 to 3 m/s (maximum speed up to 6 m/s). The model is equipped with 16 degrees of freedom, powerful joint motors with improved response speed and heat dissipation, and support for replacement with hybrid wheel-leg modules.

Navigation and Autonomous Operation

Unitree A2-W is equipped with LiDAR, an HD camera (resolution up to 2568×1448 @ 15 fps), lighting, a microphone array, and a 5 W speaker. This configuration ensures reliable obstacle detection, spatial orientation, and data collection for mapping. Autonomous navigation depends on software, map quality, and additional modules (GPS, 4G, Wireless Vector Positioning Follow). The robot is well-suited for inspections, logistics, patrolling, and testing algorithms.

Power and Operating Duration

The power supply of Unitree A2-W is based on a modern dual-slot system with hot-swappable battery support, allowing for quick continuation of work without long stops. The robot uses lithium batteries of the BT3-02 model. Each battery has a capacity of 9000 mAh, a nominal voltage of 50.4 V, a charging voltage of 58.8 V, and a weight of 3.3 kg. The batteries are protected according to the IP67 standard and operate in a wide temperature range: charging from 0 °C to +65 °C, discharge from −20 °C to +70 °C. When using two batteries, the total capacity is 18000 mAh.

The charger supports an input voltage of AC 100–240 V with a maximum current of 5 A, and outputs DC 58.8 V ± 0.3 V at a current of 7.0 A ± 0.7 A. The device also has IP67 protection. Thanks to the hot-swappable batteries, the robot can quickly return to task execution.
