IMT MS1 Spherical Metal Powder from Maraging Steel
Nickel-based metal powder IMT MS1 (15-53 μm) is a grade of maraging steel specifically developed for additive manufacturing using SLM and DMLS technologies. In terms of its chemical composition, this material is identical to 18Ni300 type steel, making it the gold standard in the production of high-load parts and molds. Choosing MS1 metal grade for 3D printing is recommended when extremely high requirements are placed on the strength of the finished products.
The main "feature" of MS1 lies in its strengthening mechanism. Unlike traditional tool steels, where hardness depends on carbon content, the magic here happens due to intermetallic precipitates during aging. This means you get a material that is incredibly stable during printing and predictable in heat treatment.

Technical Characteristics and Powder Structure of MS1
IMT MS1 powder possesses ideal sphericity, which is critically important for uniform layer distribution in the build chamber. The 15-53 μm fraction ensures high density of products and minimal porosity.
- Composition base: low carbon content, high nickel content (~18%), cobalt, and molybdenum.
- As-printed state: soft martensite with a hardness of 30–36 HRC. At this stage, the part is easily subjected to mechanical processing.
- Physical properties: density is approximately 8.0 g/cm³. The material demonstrates excellent layer weldability and an extremely low tendency to crack formation.
The Magic of Heat Treatment: From Plasticity to Extreme Strength
Using MS1 powder gives the engineer room for maneuver. Immediately after printing, the material is sufficiently ductile (tensile strength ~1000–1100 MPa), allowing for easy finishing or thread cutting. However, after the aging procedure (holding at a temperature of 480–500°C), the characteristics skyrocket:
- Hardness: increases to 50–56 HRC.
- Ultimate tensile strength: reaches an impressive 1900–2100 MPa.
- Yield strength: approximately 1800 MPa.
- Stability: unlike the quenching of ordinary steels, MS1 practically does not deform during aging.
Why is MS1 Better Than Ordinary Tool Steel?
If you are used to working with classic tool steels, MS1 will be a pleasant discovery for you. When quenching ordinary steel, the risk of cracks and deformations is huge. With MS1 powder, the SLM printing process becomes as stable as possible. You get excellent dimensional accuracy and the ability to polish the surface to a mirror finish (SPI A/B).
