Formlabs Tough 1500 Engineering Resin Is Now Biocompatible!

On Thursday, July 29, 2021, US 3D printer and photopolymer manufacturer Formlabs announced ISO 10993 certification of its Tough 1500 Resin engineering resin. Tough 1500 resin has been tested for skin contact safety and meets the following requirements:

ISO Standard
Description
ISO 10993-5
Not cytotoxic
ISO 10993-10
Not an irritant
ISO 10993-10
Not a sensitizer

Formlabs dental resins and Formlabs BioMed resins for clinical use are certified to the stricter ISO 13485 standard because used in the mouth and may come into contact with other mucous membranes. In contrast, Tough 1500 resin only involves local contact with the skin.

The Tough 1500 Resin has a performance profile that is more suited to engineering, manufacturing, design and education applications. That is, when the requirements for the performance and safety of the product are determined by the manufacturer. The Tough 1500 Resin features many requirements for consumer and wearable applications. Therefore, Formlabs has evaluated parts printed with this material for skin contact safety in response to growing customer demands.

Tough 1500 resin is ISO 10993 skin friendly. It will continue to be supported on all Formlabs SLA 3D printers: Form 2, Form 3, Form 3B, Form 3L and Form 3BL. This makes Tough 1500 Resin the first certified skin friendly material available for Form 3, Form 3B and 3L.

Biocompatible workflow for Tough 1500

For your prints to be certified for skin contact, Tough 1500 Resin's recommended post-processing conditions must be adhered to without abnormalities:

After printing, rinse with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, ≥ 99%) in the Form Wash for 20 minutes or until completely clean. Make sure that the alcohol does not contain residues of other technical or standard resins.

Allow the parts to dry for at least 30 minutes after washing.

Once dry, post-cure parts in Form Cure. Curing parameters: 60 minutes at 70 °C.
