R&D Economics and SLA Printing Speed: How the Formlabs Form 4L Optimizes Costs and Time in Manufacturing Facilities
In modern industry and research and development (R&D) departments, machine downtime and long wait times for prototypes lead to direct financial losses. Delays in project verification generate additional costs in man-hours and electricity consumption. Until recently, engineers had to choose between a large part size and SLA printing speed.
The introduction of the large-format Formlabs Form 4L system completely eliminates this compromise. We conducted rigorous performance tests on the new printer, comparing it with the previous generation (Form 3L), to see how Low Force Display™ (LFD) technology impacts real production economics.
The LFD Revolution: The End of Speed Limitations
A key bottleneck of traditional SLA printing was the need to sequentially expose every single point of a layer using a laser beam. This meant that a densely packed build platform drastically increased the cycle time.
The Form 4L solves this problem at its core. LFD (Low Force Display™) technology utilizes an ultra-high-power light source and an advanced optical module to cure the entire layer plane simultaneously in a single pass. As a result, print time depends solely on the Z-axis height.
During our tests, a part that took 4 hours to print on the Form 3L was ready in just 1.5 hours on the new Form 4L model. PreForm software allows engineers to maximize the use of the massive build volume (330 × 190 × 300 mm), guaranteeing a radical increase in throughput.
Reliability and Continuous Operation: Performance Tests
To prove the flexibility of the Form 4L system, we tested it in two extreme production scenarios:
Test 1: Rapid Iteration (4 hours)
In situations where every minute counts — e.g., when an R&D team needs to approve a project before the end of a shift — the Form 4L outpaces the competition. In just 4 hours, the machine is capable of delivering two fully loaded platforms of precise parts.
Test 2: Mass Production and Throughput (60 hours). For enterprises with continuous workflows, repeatability and overall machine throughput are critical. The batch of parts shown in the photo is the result of 19 cycles, totaling 60 hours of printer operation. The Form 4L allows for quick platform swapping and seamless transition between tasks, maintaining a stable manufacturing pace with predictable lead times.
It is worth noting an important economic aspect: for the identical print volume, the Form 4L consumes approximately 30% less electricity compared to older systems, which generates noticeable budget savings for companies operating 24/7.
Next-Generation Engineering Materials
The potential of such a fast machine would be wasted without the right materials. In our trials, we used the innovative Formlabs Clear Resin V5.
This resin features excellent transparency and is optimized for the extreme speeds of LFD technology. Furthermore, the intelligent automatic resin dispensing system from two cartridges in the Form 4L ensures maintenance-free operation even during the longest, multi-day print cycles.
Automated Post-Processing Ecosystem
Industrial repeatability requires standardized post-processing. After printing is complete, the build platform with the parts is transferred to the automated large-format Form Wash L V2, which precisely removes uncured polymer residue. The final step is the Form Cure L V2 chamber, where heat and UV light give the parts their final mechanical properties.
